It was a seriously hot day at Wembley yesterday as we started the season officially with the usual opening game, the FA Community Shield. This time against Chelsea who are under new management in Maurizio Sarri, but it was just good to see our boys back in action once again after our all conquering Premier League title win last season.
Good to see 18-year old Phil Foden get a start too with the likes of Sterling and De Bruyne still missing after World Cup semi-final action. Chelsea had a few changes to their starting line-up as well but under Sarri you would expect their team to change quite a bit once the Premier League actually starts.
Anyway, it didn’t take us long to get going and once again it was absolutely fantastic to see Sergio Agüero starting the season doing what he does best. Scoring goals. His clinical left-foot finish on thirteen minutes gave us the lead after some great work and set-up from Foden. It was Agüero’s fourth Wembley goal for us and it was also his sixth goal in sixth appearances against Chelsea in all competitions.
In what was a slow placid game, mainly due to the weather, it was a difficult game to get up and excited about, but in the end it is still always great to win it. Not that I claim in like a trophy like some other team’s fans do, but to stop Chelsea claiming a win is the main thing.
Agüero should have made it 2-0 before he eventually did, but our ex-keeper Willy Caballero stayed on his feet to push Sergio a little wider and in the end he hit the side netting. He didn’t miss his next chance though as he finished clinically once again after Bernado Silva played him in after some initial good work from John Stones who broke up Chelsea’s play to start the move.
Great start to the season and a great day out. I thought Phil Foden was simply outstanding and although Chelsea were clearly not at their best, he controlled the pace of the game and seemed to be involved in everything. Foden was man-of-the-match for me, despite Aguero’s two goals.
