Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has signed a new two-year deal with the club on Friday. The Chilean boss had less than twelve months remaining on his previous deal with the Cityzens, so a renewal was probably the best thing to have done right now. This however, does in no way, cement Pellegrini’s place as the boss of Manchester City for the next two years.

The world of professional football is notoriously result oriented, and even more so for a club like City. The kind of season the Etihad Stadium based club had last time, cannot be deemed as acceptable to the billionaire owners who have invested so much in the club. Questions marks were immediately raised when City first fell out of the title race in February, and nothing has been able to banish them since then.

Even news of a new deal being offered to Pellegrini cannot be taken as a real signal of support because if things were to go awry for the club, the boss would be the first person to truly feel the heat. All the uncertainty that surrounds Pellegrini is compounded when you take a look at the odds for the winner of this year’s sack race. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is the favourite to be the first manager to lose his job this season, but Manuel Pellegrini’s name is very high up on the list as well.

Rumours about Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola replacing Pellegrini have been swirling around Europe and the UK for a long time now. However, this change is yet to take place and the reason behind that has to be mini-revival that Pellegrini brought about towards the end of the last season where City managed to reclaim the second spot in the League table. Earlier in the campaign though, City were found floundering in fourth place and had that streak continued till the end of the season, then we would surely have seen a new boss at the City helm.

“I think I would like to be here a long time but it’s impossible in this profession. But if you ask me, of course I think I can continue working here for the long term” said the City boss in an interview soon after news of his new deal with the club was brought to light. Diplomacy and professionalism are the keywords here, and if you ask me, Pellegrini very well knows how much pressure he is under.

But then again, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that out. With the amount of money that their owner’s have splashed on new signings and facilities, they have a right to demand results, and if they don’t get what they want, then Pellegrini will indeed be history. For now though, Manuel Pellegrini still remains as the boss of Manchester City but to remain so, he’ll need to hope that his boys can get off to a flying start to the new campaign.
