David Silva scored the equalizer for City just before half time after an error from the Chelsea ‘keeper
Saturday night’s top of the table clash with Chelsea offered the Citizens a brilliant opportunity to cut down the five point gap that had built up between us and the league leaders. Unfortunately for us though, it was an opportunity that went to waste as we failed to obtain maximum points from the ultimately cagey affair. I would have had a much better time writing about the game being a City fan had we won it in the end, but that is not to be the case and all we can do is forget about what has occurred and look ahead.
The situation as it stands right now is that the future does not look to be too promising as it is in fact advantage Chelsea in the title race. The five point lead that the Blues had taken over us could only have been cut down by us last night because we have now played both our games against them. Therefore, it is now impossible for us to directly make Chelsea drop points and the best we can do is hope that they slip up while we don’t. Once again, just the thought of a victory at the Bridge and hence just a two point gap between us and the Londoners had me drooling and it is so hard to tell myself that this was a dream that will remain unfulfilled. The glass appears half empty to me and many of my fellow Citizens, but the truth is that we should see it as half full. The honest truth is that we were up against possibly the best team in England right now in their own backyard, so a draw does not appear to be a bad result. In fact, we could easily have been on the receiving end of a loss had we not gotten lucky. Who would’ve thought that Thibaut Courtois, who is enjoying such a good season with Chelsea after managing to oust the colossal Petr Cech out of the team would have made that big a blunder which ultimately led to our equalizer. That is not where our luck ends though as you look at how David Silva actually managed to score from that range with a volley that somehow miraculously avoided so many players en route to goal.
Looking back on the game once again, and considering these factors, a point does in fact appear to be a good return. It is anyway extremely hard to get anything out of a Jose Mourinho team playing at home and the way Liverpool got beaten by a brilliantly resilient and patient Chelsea side just a few days ago was definitely a word of warning for us, and one that we did end up heeding. Although a point is not what we would have ideally liked to have gotten from the game, I can truly say that I am indeed satisfied with it. I’d rather be five points off the pace than be eight points off it and with three and half months to go, there is plenty of time for us to catch up to the leaders.
