Frustrating draw against a poor Arsenal

With Chelsea’s shock home defeat to Palace yesterday we went into this game having to think about getting all 3 points, because if we won today and then beat Chelsea on Tuesday it would have put us back in the title race. Of course it would still be a difficult task to win it, but if Chelsea and Spurs do have a massive slip up you have to be there to take your chance if required.

Unfortunately once again this season we didn’t capitalise on Chelsea’s defeat and came away from the Emirates with a 2-2 draw and just the one point, instead of the three required. Going into the game I was quite positive we would be good for all the points considering how bad Arsenal have played recently. Along with all the turmoil surrounding Wenger and his silence on whether he is staying or going. It wasn’t to be though and poor defending from both teams made it an entertaining game for the neutral.

Sane with a fantastic finish to make it 1-0 City

What on earth was Navas doing at right back was my first question when I saw the team sheet? Has he ever played there before? In fact he was one of seven attacking players we had on the pitch from the start and that’s with our poor defensive record as well.

Sterling had a great chance at the beginning but he bottled a 50/50 with the Arsenal stand in keeper Martinez and his rebound went well wide. At the other end, Welbeck didn’t bottle his 50/50 with Clichy and his rebound flew just inches wide. All of a sudden though we were one nil up. De Bruyne’s humped clearance in his own half went up, over and straight through the centre of Arsenal’s defence and found Sane. He picked the ball up, outpaced Bellerin and headed straight to goal where he never panicked as he took it around Martinez with ease and slipped it into the empty goal. What a fantastic finish.

How Navas was not sent off I don’t know, what an awful high studded foot on Monreal who was lucky not to get seriously hurt. Thankfully he wasn’t and not long after, De Brunye’s wonderful strike hit the foot of the post in what would have been a superb goal and finish. The open game continued but that was no surprise with two poor defenses on display. Walcott got away with one too then as he studded Otememdi’s foot we should have earned him a yellow card.

Even whilst slipping over Aguero made it 2-1 City

Walcott then equalised after Clichy was way too slow to get out from a corner and played him onside. Shocking and basic defending. With no messing around we hit straight back when De Bruyne hit the post again with a deflected shot. We continued attacking and from the other side Ageuro showed how to score from a tight angle even whilst slipping over as he hit the shot.

At the start of the second half Ageuro should have scored a header and I think we’d have won the game after that. He missed though and before we knew Mustafi had scored from a corner. But oh my word our defending was so woeful once again. First Navas and De Bruyne didn’t help each other and both were caught ball watching down the left. Monreal’s had acres of space but his cross was cleared and put out for a corner. From that corner though Mustafi headed in without much of challenge.

More points dropped and with have the league leaders Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge up next our fans headed home. Arsenal fans instead decided to argue and fight each other outside the ground.
