The New Year could not have gotten off to a better start for Manchester City Football Club after they managed to finally claw themselves back to parity with Chelsea who have been leading the Premier League ever since the new season began back in August. The Citizens had been playing catch up owing to a slow start to the new campaign which coupled with a dash off the running blocks for Chelsea meant that we were off the pace at the beginning of the season. Well, I’d take being off the pace at the start of the season than being off the pace by the time we head into the final stretch of games towards April.
What we finally managed to achieve this week was on the cards for a long time though, and it was just as I said on the article that was published on the 21st of December last year. One slip up from Mourinho’s boys was all that was required for us to get back on level terms with the London side. The manner in which we did manage to catch up with Chelsea this last matchday was far from convincing though and for a moment it did feel as if it might just be another opportunity lost for us, after the Burnley mishap of course. Yaya Toure’s thunderous strike and Stevan Jovetic’s cute finish put us in the driver’s seat against Sunderland, but two quick fire goals from Gus Poyet’s boys brought the game back to 2-2. All of a sudden it felt like the game against Burnley all over again which was still fresh in our memory. A certain Frank Lampard however made sure that it was not to be another two points dropped at home against lowly opposition. The former Chelsea man, celebrated the extension of his loan deal with Manchester City by scoring the winner for us in the 73rd minute of the game with a well executed header from a Gael Clichy cross. I only wonder how Chelsea fans are feeling right now as they see their idol who created so many memories for them wearing a darker shade of blue, turning the Premier League title race against them after scoring the winner for City. This is of course, not the first time the former Chelsea man has had a direct effect on a game for the Citizens.
In all, Frank Lampard has won us a total of seven points this League campaign. He earned two points by scoring the winner against Sunderland on New Year’s Day, he also earned two points after he scored the winner against Leicester City back in December. His most important contribution though came against Chelsea in that all important game back in September. That day he won City one point, bringing his tally to five points. The final two points that I am referring to are the two points that Chelsea failed to attain against us that very day. Therefore, his 85th minute equalizer past Thibaut Courtois more than three months ago not only earned City a point, but also dropped two for Chelsea. The New Year’s Day’s round of fixtures may just turn out to be one of the standout matchdays of the season as we drew level on points and goal difference with Chelsea by winning our game against Sunderland while our rivals succumbed to a defeat at the hands of their city rivals Tottenham. The most ironic aspect of this whole story though is the part that is being played out by Lampard and once again, I wonder exactly how the Chelsea fans are reacting to his antics.
