Shaun Goater Day – 21st June 2000
As it’s the 21st June, we get to pay tribute to a City legend as we celebrate Shaun Goater Day once again! Come on, you know you all want to belt out ‘Feed The Goat and he will score…’ at work today don’t you?
The City cult legend scored 103 goals in 189 games in five years at the end of nineties and early noughties and he is still fondly remembered by all that got to see him play during those crazy few years.
‘Shaun Goater Day’ came about when Bermuda awarded him the freedom of their island on 21st June 2000. Nearly twenty years later City fans across the globe come out to remember one of the club’s all time cult heroes. Thanks to all the goals he scored whilst wearing the sky blue shirt of our great club.

It isn’t just goals that Shaun is remembered for either, well maybe those two he scored against United in the derby when we beat them in 2002. He’s also remembered for the love he gave back to us supporters and going out of his way to meet and greet fans at any opportunity, what a guy!

The Goat, who was at Manchester United as a youth team player, never looked like making as a top flight player in the early days. His gangly, awkward style of play stood him out from others in a way that certain people thought he couldn’t play football. However, once he was moved forward from his early youth days as a midfielder to a striker, he never looked back. The goals started to come and just kept coming.
After seven years at Rotherham United, Shaun Goater moved to Bristol City and just two later he was signed by Joe Royle to help save our club from another relegation. He couldn’t though and we were relegated to the third tier. However the following two seasons he was outstanding as he finished as our top goalscorer in both 1998/99 and 1999/00 as we won back to back promotions.

Unfortunately through injury as well as new signings, Goater didn’t play as many games as we’d have liked him to in our first season back in the Premier League and we were relegated once again. Still, that didn’t stop him still finishing as our top goalscorer even though he didn’t actually get that many.
In the 2001–02 season under new manager Kevin Keegan, the Goat incredibly scored over 30 goals as we bounced straight back to the top flight as champions. The rest they say, is history and here we are now, seventeen consecutive season later still in the top division. Oh and five times Premier League champions as well as recently becoming only the third team in 35 years to win back to back league titles.
