Manchester City’s hard fought victory over Everton coupled with Chelsea’s loss to Newcastle United meant that we were just three points off the top of the table heading into the second week of December. The narrow 1-0 win over the Toffees was far from convincing but a win is a win and getting points off Everton is always a tough task. So why on Earth could we Citizens have mixed, or in fact bitter feelings after what could possibly be a season defining win for us? The answer, is of course, Sergio Aguero. The Argentina international injured himself in just the 2nd minute of the match after a collision with Everton’s Muhammed Besic. Our number 16 seemed to jar his left knee after clashing with Besic almost immediately after recovering from a challenge from Seamus Coleman.
The injury does look to be a very nasty one, especially when you consider that Aguero was in fact reduced to tears as he limped off the Etihad pitch to nervous applause. Our initial fears regarding the seriousness of the injury were confirmed soon after the game drew to a close as City boss Manuel Pellegrini stated the following in his post match interview, “Sergio has a problem in his knee ligament. We will see how serious it is after he has had a scan. It is not good news and I don’t think he will be able to play next week. He will not be with us for Roma – which is an important game. He was more calm when I saw him after seeing the doctor but generally we are not sure how he is.” Unsurprisingly, this should come as disturbing news for every single City fan in the solar system as it is needless to say how pivotal Sergio Aguero is to our ambitions this season. In fact, his absence should actually be missed by all football fans throughout England, regardless of whichever club they have pledged allegiance to. The 26 year old has been the best player in this season’s Premier League without any shadow of a doubt. His 14 goals in the League have him at the top of the scorer’s charts with Chelsea’s Diego Costa his closest competitor with 11 goals. Aguero will be sorely missed, that is for sure, but what we need to hope is that we do not end up missing him too much. The timing of the injury was absolutely horrendous, although there is surely no good time to lose your most in form player. Wednesday’s game against Roma at the Stadio Olimpico is probably the biggest European fixture City have ever participated in barring the Cup Winners’s Cup success in 1970.
A win is what we need on Wednesday and our chances of getting one have been dealt a blow by this injury setback, but it has in no way ruled out all the chances. The injury to Aguero looks to be a serious one and already numerous sources are hinting at potential ligament damage that could require a couple of months to heal, but what we City fans cannot do at this point of time is look too far ahead into the future. AS Roma await us with our Champions League destiny in their hands and this is surely no time to be feeling sorry for our fallen warrior. City still have the resources to make up for the absence of our star man, and I am expecting another one of our players to step up to the plate and take charge of the goal scoring, as we wish Sergio Aguero a quick and successful return to full fitness.
