If reports from England are to be believed, then Manchester City’s owner, Khaldoon Al Mubarak is expected to fly down to the United Kingdom from Dubai for showdown talks with his team’s manager, Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean coach has felt the heat this season after seeing his side stutter to a second placed finish in the Premier League while a poor display over two legs saw them get knocked out of the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona in the Round of 16 for the second year running.
An unacceptable Fourth Round exit at the hands of Middlesbrough in the F.A. Cup and another equally miserable loss against Newcastle United in the Fourth Round of the Capital One Cup summarizes our whole season and I do not need to point out that it has been one that is in no way what we Citizens have come to expect from our club. Gone are those days when we used to fight relegation, the new Manchester City fears nobody, and the failings of this season must quickly be forgotten before preparation begins for the coming campaign.
But before we can look forward to the new season, what we need to find out right now is who is going to be managing the club come August. Pep Guardiola, Jurgen Klopp, Diego Simeone, Carlo Ancelotti and Rafa Benitez are some of the names that are being thrown around by the media. Manuel Pellegrini’s own future though seems to be up in the air.
Speculation surrounds the former Villareal boss’ future at the club and while there is no concrete indication as to what may happen to him, the man himself remains confident that he will be at the Etihad to see out the final year of his contract. Pellegrini deserves a lot of credit for capturing the Premier League title from the hands of Liverpool last year and while this season is in no way near acceptable, I still believe that he should be given another season at the club.
Exactly why Al Mubarak is coming over to Manchester to meet the manager is still not known and there is not enough inside information for us to take any hints from. A season review from the manager is surely on the cards, but the media themselves are still unsure whether or not there are legitimate doubts about Pellegrini’s future at the club. Moreover, whatever speculation that is going around has surely got more to do with the availability of a large number of high profile football managers right now.
So, news hunters are acting as news makers and taking the freedom to put Manuel Pellegrini’s job in doubt because of his team’s under performance this season. Thereafter, these media people are also taking the freedom to link the to-be-vacant hot seat at City to some of the game’s other big bosses whose future is unclear as well. All in all, all we can do now is guess what the outcome of the meeting will be and only time will tell whether or not Manuel Pellegrini stays as coach or not.
